As part of educating the whole child, we offer a variety of enrichment opportunities throughout the school year.

Band

Advisor: Bill Schubeck

8th Grade Band at the Opening Cookout (2023).

Students in grades 6-8 may participate in additional bands and ensembles. Involvement varies based on the festival and competition schedule.

Chess Team

Advisor: Currently Open

Our Chess Team is a year-round afterschool program. Novice and experienced players learn basic techniques, strategy, and more.

Chess Team highlights include placing second at the National K-9 Junior High Scholastic Chess Championships in 2015 in the K-8 Under 750 Division, and Maine State Scholastic Chess Champions in the K-6 and K-8 Division in 2014 and 2015.


Drama

Advisor: Audrey Albert

Typically in spring, students in grades 5-8 can participate in our school play. There is a friendly open audition process for student actors. Student stage crew, pit band and other needs are at the Producer's digression based on adult volunteer supervision/help and other factors. Productions are headed by BHCS leadership with directors who change each year. Students who participate must follow all regular rules and procedures, attend all rehearsals (unless they are absent from school) and performances. Shows in the past include from various directors;

Garden Club

Advisors: Heather Nelson & Cate Reuter

Garden Club at BCHS meets year-round to dig in the dirt, learn about gardens, and eat healthy snacks! With participation starting in Grade 2, students maintain the school greenhouse and vegetable gardens. We have nurtured the flower gardens around the school and have even helped with some of the plantings on Main Street in Blue Hill. 


Math League

Our mathletes are made up of up to six teams; two each for Grades 6-8.

Math teams are part of the Eastern Maine Math League. There are three meets each year in the Fall, Winter, and Spring. Fall and Winter meets are held locally, the Spring meet is held at Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor, Maine.

  • Grades 2-4 Chorus Cub: after school starting mid-October to perform in school concerts

  • Grades 5-8 Chorus: one period, once a week

  • Grades 7-8 Choice Special: Ukulele, Circle Drumming, Piano Keyboard, Native American Flutes


Odyssey of the Mind

Advisors: Nell Herrmann

Odyssey of the Mind provides students in grades 5-8 with a place to learn today’s creative problem-solving skills while having fun!

Odyssey of the Mind has been the world’s greatest creative problem-solving program since it began in 1978. What started as a project for students in a single industrial design class has grown into a worldwide program that has reached multiple generations, allowing students to learn, develop, and employ skills related to teamwork, resource management, designing and making, divergent thinking, and so much more.
