Dear Parents,
Our new social studies unit is economics. So far we have talked about going shopping, what wants and needs are, and today we did a lesson on goods and services. We read the book If You Give A Mouse A Cookie. We listed all of the wants the mouse had and discussed which items were goods and which items were services. Then we wrote our own class book If You Give A Teacher A Dog.
In math we have completed unit 5 and we are on to unit 6. This unit focuses on fact families. They were actually shouting out “this is fun Mrs. Cole!” We are still working on our addition facts to the sums of ten and doubles. Thanks for working on their math homework.
In writing this week we have been focusing on editing our stories with a friend. They read their journals to each other and they have an edit card checklist to help each other with spelling, organization, and “does it make sense.” Wow! They have learned so much about writing this year. Now when they come to share their writing with me they have circled words that they need to work on and they show me how they added periods and added detail to their story. They are also starting to publish their stories themselves on the computer using a program called text edit. They are really excited when the computer reads the story back to them.
Again, thank you for sending in those love notes. It does help with accountability and it shows your child that you are excited about their reading. They so enjoy every day at circle listening to me share them and filing them in our “Love Note Box.”
In spelling we have been focusing on the silent e rule. We have worked with these “family” words so far: ake as in cake, ike as in like, one as in bone. They are also working on the most commonly misspelled words from their journals such as they, see, went, from, of, like, look, and said.
Enjoy your weekend.
