January 7th Newsletter Happy 2010!!!

 Dear Parents,

I had a wonderful break and I am glad to be back in school and on a regular schedule. We have started a new unit in science this month.  We will be focusing for two weeks on describing the movement of objects across the sky, as seen from the Earth. This week we have focused on describing how the sun and moon seem to move across the sky (key word: seem). We have discussed how the sun stays still and the Earth goes around the sun.  Next week we will describe the changes in the appearance of the moon from day to day.

We finished unit 4 in math today! In unit 5 we will be working on place value, number stories, and basic math facts.  They will be practicing these concepts by acting them out, doing addition and subtraction mad minutes, and using counters to help find the sums and differences.  We will also be practicing learning sums to 10 by doing choral readings of flash cards so that they will know their basic facts automatically.

In writing we reviewed complete sentences.  We are also working on writing stories of at least five sentences that include a beginning, middle (problem), and ending (solution).

I am starting to have parent volunteers come into the classroom to read to, or with, students during our Workboard time and/or work with students during our writing time. The reading activity would be to take the students out in the hallway (right next to the classroom door) and reread their guided reading books, checking off each child that you have read with for fluency.  The writing activity would be working with students in the classroom and helping with sounding out words, editing stories, and typing and publishing stories using the binding machine.  The times available are Tuesday or Thursday mornings from 9:15-9:45 or Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1:15-1:45.  Please sign the attached sheet for days and times that you would like to come in. Please send it in on Monday and we will start the volunteering on January 19th.  I will confirm your time next week.  For those parents who cannot volunteer their time during the school day, don’t worry, I’ll need plenty of volunteers for collecting materials for art and/or science projects.  Again, thank you for being such supportive and understanding parents.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,
